We live in southern CA. Where should we leave from? Can the three of us stay in one cabin? We want a balcony cabin. We do not want a fancy ship. What are the definite ports that we want to stop at? My DH wants to see Denali . How do we do that? I am somewhat disabled as I have had extensive back surgeries over the last several years. Are there better ships that are more equipped to offer more help in that area than other ships?
There used to be cruises from Seattle ... not sure if they still have them. Lots of Alaska cruises leave out of Vancouver, BC - Canada. (However, you mention seeing Denali, so that means you won't be doing a R/T cruise (Inside Passage) in and out of the same port.) You'll either have to fly to Alaska and come south or vice versa.)
Most of the ships will have balcony cabins that accommodate up to four; could be a bit of a crowd though. You need to make sure you're booking a cabin that will accommodate extra pax. There are also special cabins for those with disabilities.
Denali can't be done as a day excursion from a port. You can do the land portion to see Denali on your own easily; alternatively, you can book a cruise-tour where you do a land package that goes to Denali with the cruiseline before or after the cruise (recommend before; which means flying to Alaska and then sailing back).

Just based on that pre-work, I switched from wanting to do an Inside Passage cruise to doing the Gulf of Alaska cruise from Anchorage to Vancouver.
P.S. I should mention that we did our Alaska cruise with Princess. One of the deciding factors for us in choosing Princess (aside from their experience in the area) was that we wanted to travel all the way to Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean and we didn't want to drive the haul road on our own. I second the motion of going to the Cruise Critic Alaska board for great ideas. Princess (and Holland America) have been doing Alaska forever and own hotels, trains, etc. there giving their passengers the best. I am sure you will have a wonderful time if you do the groundwork and know what you want.

I can't speak of the experience, yet, however, I wanted to make a comment on your issue of some disability. We want to take a family trip to Alaska for the first time. What is the best recommendation for the best way to see the most? Our children are 21 and 23 so no need to entertain little ones. We definitely would like to try to see Denali, glaciers, whale watch, northern lights, salmon fishing and even try panning for gold.
Well first, seeing the northern lights in the land of the midnight sun is a bit contradictory. October - April is the time for seeing the aurora, but not for cruising, salmon fishing, visiting Denali or panning for gold (the water tends to be a bit rigid.)
How much time do you have and when would you have it? Cruising season is roughly mid-May to mid-September, and both the round trip cruises (out of Vancouver or Seattle) and the one-way cruises alaska cruise alaska tour (between Vancouver and Seward or Whittier, or v.v.) require seven days, so combining a cruise alaska cruise alaska tour with land would require (a) a one-way cruise alaska cruise alaska tour either originating or ending in Vancouver, and (b) at least an additional week (i.e. 14 days minimum.)

The cruises are very affordable on a per-person-per-day basis, and offer the ability to see Southeast Alaska and the Inside Passage with a minimum of fuss; like most of Alaska these are roadless areas, so flying or sailing is the only way to experience them.
On the other hand, even road-based touring doesn't expose you to huge parts of Alaska - the road system is limited and the state is humongous; you won't see much of "the bush" or be able to experience the arctic, or much native culture, from a car.
So it's not an easy question. More than most destinations Alaska requires a degree of research on a visitor's part, so that you make the most of your visit in your terms. Fancy a "fly-in" fishing trip where a float plane flies you to a lake or river, drops you off and then returns to pick you up? Bear watching? How about visiting an Eskimo village and sticking a toe in the Arctic Ocean?
