Hotel Florence is nice and located right at the ferry docks. Be sure to ask about AC because some rooms do not have it. I have also stayed at Hotel Centrale. It is nice and all rooms have AC. But, it is up 86 steps. It sounds worse than it is. The steps are close together. cruise line discounts I had no trouble carrying cruise line discounts my luggage up....and I am no spring chicken!
I second Hotel Florence. We stayed there and found it completely charming and a great price. We were expecting it to be a little outdated since the price was so good, but lo and behold, the hotel is as nice as it's website. cruise line discounts I think it is the best value in Bellagio. It has a fabulous location on the waterfront. The hotel also has a great restaurant with a beautiful trellis that is right on the water as well. The lobby was so unique and well furnished. Our room was also very charming. Yes, make sure you ask for an air conditioned room. We walked up and down the Bellagio waterfront and noticed a lot of the interiors of the hotels were outdated, but the exterior was beautiful.
For dinner in the hotel's restaurant guests can opt either for the menu of the day or a la carte . W
As we descend the two lane street leading straight to the shores of Lake Maggiore, I can't stop but admire the beautiful houses red lion inn at the quay surrounded red lion inn at the quay by perfectly manicured greenery. The comune of Cannero Riviera red lion inn at the quay seems strangely quiet in early afternoon. We are barely greeted by a cat looking down to us from a fence. But the scenery is bound to change red lion inn at the quay once we reach the waterfront. We turn left, following the sign pointing us towards Hotel Cannero , and as we pass a number of restaurants, it feels like everybody gathered here for lunch. You can't blame them, the views are spellbinding and the blissful May sun makes the water look like someone spilled diamonds in the lake.
Cannero Riviera is small. It barely has over one thousand residents and it can easily pass unperceived. Nested between all-time favorites like Stresa and Locarno, red lion inn at the quay and with no attraction in particular to catch the attention of the tourists, you can very well pass through without ever knowing it. The main road connecting the towns and villages along the Western shore of Lake Maggiore crosses the upper end of Cannero Riviera, nothing red lion inn at the quay special if you ask me. The magic only happens once you start to explore red lion inn at the quay the narrow red lion inn at the quay streets leading to the water.
We find Hotel Cannero at the end of the promenade. The atmosphere is relaxed in spite of the considerable number of people having lunch both on the terrace and inside the restaurant. We are greeted by Signora Maria Carla, the owner of the hotel, an extremely nice lady, in her golden years. It soon becomes clear to us that she's the one setting the tone for all the staff to have such friendly and helpful dispositions. And I have to say, everyone here is incredibly nice, 100% of the time , and my husband and I already feel at home five minutes after arriving. While we check in and our luggage is taken care of, I observe the surroundings, the gorgeously painted doors and hips of fresh cut flowers. I'm impressed already!
Then we are given a short tour of the hotel. We pass from one building to another, sometimes through corridors red lion inn at the quay that retrace original alleyways. Hotel Cannero very much resembles a village in itself . The various buildings red lion inn at the quay patched together come each of them with a different history and character, but there is a sense of continuity and harmony. We learn that one of the buildings was once a monastery, another an aristocratic residence... We especially like the last one, with its beautifully painted wooden beams, red lion inn at the quay classy furniture and comfortable armchairs and we promise ourselves to come back later, maybe after dinner, to relax in the company of the music.
When we finally get to our room, we find fresh oranges and home-made marmalade waiting for us on the table. The room is spacious, and the bed is comfy, with a nicely painted headboard. red lion inn at the quay But before really checking the room, I run to the balcony to glance at the views. I love this scenery, red lion inn at the quay and just as I make myself comfortable in one of the chairs, I see a boat approaching. The landing stage is just in front of the hotel, which makes it very easy to explore other towns around the lake.
After we freshen up, we go downstairs and Signora Maria Carla introduces us to her son. Hotel Cannero has been in their family for four generations and they have many stories to share. Later we meet the daughter-in-law who is in charge 'of the flowers and the wine'. She organizes a free wine tasting every afternoon in the hotel's cellar so guests can choose their wine for dinner or buy a bottle or a few as a souvenir. The three of them are natural, genial hosts, and talk proudly of the region's food, the beauty of their hometown and the blessings of the sheltered bay Cannero Riviera is situated in, its microclimate, oranges and wine.
For dinner in the hotel's restaurant guests can opt either for the menu of the day or a la carte . We alternate the two options, especially since the menu seems an awful lot of food to us. I especially enjoy the salad buffet, but everything else is just as yummy and fresh and the presentation of each dish is flawless. We have dinner red lion inn at the quay on the lakeside terrace and inside when the evenings are chillier, red lion inn at the quay and we can't stop thinking just how perfect this place is to kickstart or rekindle a romance. All guests are relaxed and carefree, and we can really tell this as we watch the kids playing hide-and-sick after dark on the little streets of the historical center behind the hotel, while the parents enjoy a last drink by the lakefront.
In the morning they manage to surprise us again with the abundance to be found at the breakfast table. I love, love, love the cute knitted hens sitting on the boiled eggs. Also I can't have enough of the panna cotta and orange marmalade, red lion inn at the quay both an absolute must try. But there are uncounted red lion inn at the quay for dishes to be sampled, from cold cuts and locally produced cheeses, to fresh fruits and vegetables, cereals, pastries, tarts, etc. Our favorite place to have breakfast is on the terrace by the restaurant, so we can easily replenish our plates if needed so, while also enjoying the breathtaking views.
There are plenty of spots to be discovered both inside and around the hotel, and it's impossible for us to get bored. One day we even visit Villa Taranto in Verbania, but the impressive Isola Madre and Isola Bella are not far away either and can be accessed either by bus or boat, and of course, by car. However, red lion inn at the quay we both like spending time in Cannero Riviera best, for it is an incredibly peaceful place. And though small, it has plenty to offer, and more secrets waiting to be discovered than many famous places (hint: try to find the little port, the old lavatory, the 3,000 years old Egyptian cat and the invisible Jesus).
This looks and sounds delightful! red lion inn at the quay Would love to visit one day. I ve only passed by the lakes while working briefly in Italy and never got the chance to explore the area. Must put the right one day. Reply Delete Replies Laura Orange June 23, 2013 at 2:01 PM
Love Maggiore and next time I visit I know exactly where I m going to stay! Stunning hotel with wonderful relaxing views. I can see why you had a hard time leaving. Reply Delete Replies Laura Orange June 27, 2013 at 8:42 AM

As I mentioned, Lake Como was awash with beautiful lake front villas. In Bellagio car rental munich germany there are two villas that have opened their gardens to the public. On our second day in Bellagio, we decided to stay in town and visit one of the them, Villa Melzi. Villa Melzi was owned by the Vice President of the Italian Republic under Napoleon.
The main house is closed, as it is a private residence, but visitors can still roam the stunning gardens, plus visit a small museum and chapel. The azaleas were finishing up when we were there in early June, but the gardens were still ablaze with all kinds of color and a beautiful variety of gorgeous trees. This is a painting I just completed of a gazebo car rental munich germany in the gardens that sits right at the edge of the lake. It measures 24 high by 20 wide.
Your painting is lovely. Are you selling this painting? I am planning car rental munich germany a trip to Italy in October. My plane flies into Milan and it was recommended that I go to Bellagio to rest up from the jet lag. What was your overall impression compared to other areas of Italy and did you find it to be very expensive? Do you have any places to stay that you would recommend? car rental munich germany Rick Wilkes forwarded this blog to me.
Thank you for commenting on my Blog and my painting! The painting is called La Bella Cupola, and it is 24 x20 . The price for the painting with a gallery frame is $1450.00. I will email you with more information about that.
As for Bellagio, it is strikingly beautiful! How long were you planning to stay there? If only a day or two, I will say that there is not a terribly direct way to get to Bellagio using public transportation. You have to either go by bus/ferry or train/ferry with connections. But if you will have a car, it is only about 45 min. to an hour from Milano.
We stayed in a great Hotel called the Hotel Belvedere car rental munich germany . I can highly recommend it clean, professional and helpful service, and spectacular views if you get a room with a balcony or terrace. Lake Como in general is a vacation spot and can be somewhat pricey as compared to somewhere in the countryside, especially if you want a room with a view. But it is probably in line with many other touristy spots like Florence, Rome, Venice, Amalfi, etc. Unfortunately with the weak dollar any place in the European Union is going to be pricier than it was in years past. But you have the advantage of going in October, which may be past peak season, so prices may be somewhat better in terms of hotels. We didn t find meals to be terribly expensive, but it really depends on where you eat. In Bellagio we loved the restaurant Bilacus. Yum Yum!! La Punta is another good place, and it is right on the water.
If Belvedere is full you might try Hotel Florence. This hotel is right on the main waterfront. It has a nice cafe for lunch, but it might be somewhat noisier as it is near the ferries. However the ferries stop running around 10 or so, so it may not be an issue. Hotel Belvedere on the other hand is up at the top of the hill at the edge of the small town. We loved this location! Quiet and peaceful, and did I mention the views?! Hotel du Lac is nice from what I ve heard. It is in the village of Varenna (also beautiful and on a train line coming in from Milan). Albergo Milano, also in Varenna is another one we considered.

Italians say the best pecorino maui dinner cruise cheese is made from the milk of sheep that graze in wild places. I had no doubt that this was the case with the pale, aromatic slice I ate for breakfast, alongside a spoonful of pear conserve scented with saffron from crocuses grown in Gabriella's garden. There was also ricotta, homemade bread, cured meats and almost rudely ripe, intensely sweet persimmons from the tree we could see through the window.
As we were finishing our second maui dinner cruise coffee, Mario, who had clearly been up for hours, maui dinner cruise pulled up a chair and talked to us with such passion about their land and their oil – their lifeblood, he called it, matter-of-factly – that we wanted nothing more than to walk the land and taste its produce.
Abruzzo is half way down the boot of Italy , on the other side of the peninsula from Rome. It is a region of dramatic geography – high peaks contrasting with a diverse coastline and rich agricultural land still scratched with ancient tratturi , pathways along which shepherds moved their flocks in search of pasture. For centuries, although isolated by formidable mountains, Abruzzo was considered the store cupboard of Rome. It is still a region that provides abundantly, and although maui dinner cruise now thoroughly "discovered", it remains marvellously unspoilt, stoically true to itself maui dinner cruise and its deeply held traditions, not least when it comes to food.
In some ways, Mario and Gabriella Tortella's agriturismo, Le Magnolie is a microcosm of Abruzzo itself, set between sea and mountains: the Adriatic is 25km to the east, and the Gran Sasso mountain looms to the west. The handsome 16th-century farmhouse sits on a hill near the town of Loreto Aprutino and is surrounded by land that provides olive oil, wine, wheat, fruit, vegetables, herbs and honey. The abundance maui dinner cruise is thanks, in part, to its sunny hillside position and mild climate, but also to the 30 years of hard work put in by our hosts. Their agriturismo, with two en suite rooms, plus self-catering apartments and a two-bedroom chalet, is lovely: stylish but not precious, and extremely comfortable.
Days may be short in early November, but with the grape harvest just finished and the olive harvest still in progress, it is a significant time to visit Abruzzo, and especially the hill towns of Pianella, Moscufo and Loreto, often referred to as the golden triangle of olive oil.
Walking out from Le Magnolie into the surrounding countryside dotted with farms and ancient outbuildings, we were quickly lost among ancient twisted trunks, silvery maui dinner cruise leaves and the precious fruits, the ground maui dinner cruise beneath our feet as rich and damp as the air. While some farms had finished maui dinner cruise their harvest and were burning maui dinner cruise rogue olive branches, folding nets or stacking multicoloured crates, others, slowed by the recent rain, were still hard at work, picking olives by hand or machine.
maui dinner cruise To further our oil education, Mario drove us to the hamlet of Caprafico at the foot of the Majella massif. It was dark when we arrived, but not as dark as the mountains rising behind us like craggy giants. Apparently, on clear days the views are breathtaking. We heard the persistent maui dinner cruise hum of the frantoio , or olive oil press, long before we saw it. Freshly pressed maui dinner cruise olive oil smells rather like freshly cut grass: an incongruous but delicious odour on a damp November maui dinner cruise evening.
Since 1924, four generations of the Masciantonio family have produced extra virgin olive oil at their mill, Trapeto maui dinner cruise di Caprafico , and it is now considered some of the best in Italy. maui dinner cruise Trapeto di Caprafico is a happy marriage of tradition and sleek modernity and the oil is sweet, grassy and reminiscent of almonds. This is olive oil that people evangelise over; six litres clinked in time with each curve as we drove back to Le Magnolie maui dinner cruise for dinner.
That evening, at one of the long dining room tables, maui dinner cruise we tasted Mario and Gabriella's own oil, into which Gabriella had chopped dried sweet red peppers. It's called olio santo , holy oil, she told us, as she placed the dish on the table. We spooned the oil over white beans and slices of pumpkin. Next came handmade fettuccine dressed in a rich duck gravy, followed by the braised duck itself, falling maui dinner cruise off the bone. We finished with – and were finished off by – a fiendishly good ricotta, chocolate and almond pudding and a glass of inky-black digestivo made from sour cherries macerated maui dinner cruise in Montepulciano wine and sugar and left in the sun for 40 days.
Wishing our four days were 40, we left Le Magnolie and drove towards the sea. Abruzzo's identity is so inextricably connected maui dinner cruise with mountains and pastures maui dinner cruise that it's easy to forget its 130km of coast – some parts rocky and formidable, some broad, sandy and inviting. We had an excellent fish lunch at Al Vecchio Teatro in part-grotty, part-delightful Ortona, maui dinner cruise then drove south down the coast road to our second agriturismo, Fattoria dell'Uliveto, in the town of Scerni, stopping along the way to count the trabocchi , ancient fishing platforms that rise from the water like skeletal sea monsters.
Luigi di Lello, our second host, had been quite categorical: the best brodetto Vastese , the celebrated local fish soup, was to be found at Da Ferri (Via Osca 58, +39 0873 310320), a trattoria in the port region of the old town of Vasto. At first glance, the place seemed not just closed but desolate, and had me wondering if Luigi had booked a table at the right trattoria, but a side entrance opened up into a warm and suitably maritime dining room, presided over by a chef in a bright yellow toque.
Brodetto Vastese is a dish inseparable from its history. For centuries, local fishermen, having sold the best of their catch to those who could afford it, would come inland and exchange the less-sought-after fish (often the most tasty) for the farmers' tomatoes, maui dinner cruise mild and fierce peppers, and olive oil. Made and served in a wide dish called a tijella , it is robust, gutsy food that requires rolled-up sleeves, a fork, a spoon, your hands and masses of toasted bread to mop up the deeply flavoured broth. The initially empty restaurant filled steadily with locals who approached maui dinner cruise their steaming bowls with reverence and strategy.
Bartering has, it seems, played a fundamental role in the food of Abruzzo. During the laborious transumanza , the annual migration of thousands of sheep from the mountains through Abruzzo down to the plains of Puglia, shepherds would offer farmers sheep, wool and milk in exchange for shelter, oil, wheat, corn and vegetables.
Luigi and his brother Antonio remember the transumanza passing maui dinner cruise in front of the family farm which is now the agriturismo. They are as dedicated to retaining the culinary traditions borne of this exchange – and of periods of both scarcity and abundance – as they are to cultivating their land, sharing knowledge and offering hospitality.
Before Sunday lunch, we drove up into the hills to another plot of land where the two brothers and two other associates raise and slaughter pigs to make another very traditional food, ventricina del Vastese , a cured sausage of leg, loin and shoulder pork mixed with sweet and piquant red pepper, fennel seeds, black pepper and salt. Considered the best in Italy by the slow food movement, the brothers' ventricine were hanging like mottled cocoons in a cool stone room.
It tasted every bit as good as it sounded – perfectly cured, warmly spiced and served as part of a huge lunch, eaten alongside seven or eight local families at Fattoria dell'Uliveto. Every element of the meal was produced on the farm: cheese for the polpette maui dinner cruise (croquettes of cheese, egg and breadcrumbs), flour for the maccheroni alla chitarra (fat spaghetti made by rolling out egg dough over thin wires stretched on a wooden maui dinner cruise frame like a guitar), chard, sweet fennel, pork and, of course, the olive oil and deep, dark young wine.
There is always a sagra , or local festival, going on somewhere in Abruzzo. I'd berated myself for the first two days for not having planned our trip around a festival of chestnuts, snails or some ancient ritual, but then on our last night we stumbled upon a sagra in the village of Casalbordino. We never actually ascertained what we were celebrating – although we suspected it was gratitude for both new wine and new oil, but the entire village and most of the surrounding ones appeared to have come together for a riotous night of eating, drinking and dancing.
There were arrosticini , cubes of lamb impaled on wooden skewers and cooked over charcoal as shepherds have done for hundreds of years. We bought half a dozen between us and ate them while drinking violet vino novello from plastic cups and listening to a local band sing "I feel good" and watching half a dozen frisky men in medieval costume wrestle a passerby into the stocks.
The next morning, we headed for the Majella national park. Here the mountains take on Alpine maui dinner cruise proportions, maui dinner cruise silent and empty, rising maui dinner cruise sharply and then descending gradually into thick forest cut by limpid rivers. Every so often, our breath was snatched by the sight of a village balanced precariously on a ridge or peak.
But beautiful though it looked, it was not the scenery that had imprinted maui dinner cruise itself on my mind but something more elemental: smell. From the first discernible wild herb at Mario's gate, we had been on an olfactory journey: olive oil like freshly cut grass, fish soup robust with the scent of the sea, lamb seared over hot carbon, freshly pulled corks and the musty, carnal scent of 100 ventricine quietly curing.
Getting there Ryanair (ryanair.com) flies from Stansted to Abruzzo's only airport, Pescara, from £25 one way, but there are loads of flights from all over the UK to Rome, which is a couple of hours' drive away
How to do it The trip was provided by Long Travel (01694 maui dinner cruise 722193, long-travel.co.uk ) which offers week-long trips to Abruzzo, with stays in two agriturismos, maui dinner cruise from £467.50, including car hire and half-board accommodation, but not flights
