Personally I prefer the long legs into a morning arrival so you can get a decent rest into the timez
British Airways already has a special code share with Cathay Pacific to transfer Australian passengers to its A380 flights from Hong Kong to London Heathrow, as well as its own daily 777 flights all the way from Sydney.
The moves are clearly intended to leverage the preference of some travellers on the so called family cruise specials kangaroo route to fly via Asia than the Middle East. As well as being intended to retaliate against Qantas for dumping the long standing joint services agreement to London and Europe with BA for the often more convenient and efficient partnership with Emirates over its Dubai hub.
The added frisson in the BA move is the distinct possibility that on 27 February Qantas will drop the Dubai-London family cruise specials leg in favour of the gigantic foreign owned Emirates services, ending family cruise specials its long standing presence as an Australian flag carrier to the UK.
So far there is no real evidence that the Qantas-Emirates deal has achieved anything but to make Qantas smaller and expose more of its customers to the superior product offering and network offered by its Middle Easter family cruise specials benefactor.
Isn t this going to be fairly useless for kangaroo pax without family cruise specials a codeshare partner on SIN-SYD? The BA A380 looks great, but I can t imagine too many people are going to be willing to hang around for 12 hours to take the onward flight.
Except for the little problem (identified by comet #2) of why wouldn t you do the whole journey family cruise specials with SIA, CX etc. Especially if like me you swore (a few decades back) to never willingly fly BA. Not to mention family cruise specials the absurdity that both QF and BA force you to use LHR.
johnn78, BA15/16 LHR/SYD/LHR is only a handful of hours apart in SIN from BA11/12 family cruise specials LHR/SIN/LHR so if you could be bothered, no big deal time wise. Besides, you get to use the new QF lounge if you re QF Gold or Platinum, although at the time it was overcrowded and full of drunks watching state of origin. I preferred the BA lounge next door. BA premium economy is close to QF economy, but cheaper (!) and with more QF points and credits. Small bonus is the free continental side trip out of LHR or LGW.
Michael R James and George Glass, did it last year in Y+. Have flown F J and Y on both over the years and QF wins, but not at the asking premium for most fares. Yes the BA11/12 744 was tired so overdue for the 388, but the BA15/16 77W was brand new. Inflight, food was average and service ok. SIN will always beat DXB as a stopover if only for the chicken family cruise specials rice.
I guess my question is how Ben knows that there is a distinct possibility that QF will drop London on 27 Feb I haven t seen/read any indication of such a move anywhere. And as far as service goes Ben, I ll take QF over Emirates any day, and HKG or SIN stopovers trump Dubai when heading towards Europe.
JSD: I suspect what Ben is hinting is QF might be dropping DXB LHW leg as a consequence of DXB runway closure for resurfacing with capacity limitation. However, my understanding that is not due until 1 May?!
They havent dropped DXB LHR yet as they rebooked my flight in July to cater fo the runway repairs. It will be interesting how many connecting Aussies BA pick up in Singapore: I suspect not a lot as the through options are very many, and DXB isn t that bad lounge wise. The rest is a shopping centre, but then so are most airports. HK is the best for hanging family cruise specials around with wide open spaces and the shops not so much in your face.
If BA offers premium economy on this config, then its real competition to QF. Business class variances are a discussion amongst elites. Premium Economy has real potential for growth both sides (upscaling economy, downsizing business) and has higher density than full J.
WIthin the empowered/elite I agree BA s business offering is not dead flash. Nor is Lufthansa or FinnAir, both of whom offer slopers. Cathays lieflat truly IS world class, and with guaranteed aisle access, family cruise specials beats QF in the older pod config, and possibly even the newer one. At least BA s is a lieflat albiet family cruise specials small.
I suspect that as an Australian forum, this one favours the short leg on the Australian side of the unavoidable journey break. I wonder if the Avios community feel the same? Its possible they prefer their return leg to be shorter on the final arrival. Timing wise, If I can arrive morning I personally find I get into the local timezone better and thats what I get with either family cruise specials Dubai or Singapore so I am unconvinced there is an issue.
Scale wise, the BA offering solo, or with CX will be price competitive. family cruise specials QF has been on the high side and my company (who pays my flights) has begun to notice, and book accordingly. Either QF responds with a significant (and I mean 10%) price break, or they will bleed business booking.
Historically BA s WT+ was fairly poor essentially Economy food and wine but better seat, but I understand it has been upgraded family cruise specials recently. It was always best to pick QF when QF and BA were operating under the JSA with the same fares.
Personally I prefer the long legs into a morning arrival so you can get a decent rest into the timezone you are going into Thus I would prefer the old QF services via SIN going to LHR, but the new QF services via DXB coming back to Australia.
Anyone who thinks BA is rubbish or who has in a fit of pique vowed never to fly them really needs to chill out a bit. I d suggest the food and service family cruise specials on Qantas is marginally better than BA in J, but the club world sleepers are very good and everything else is fine. Likewise Cathay family cruise specials is good but not dramatically better than QF or BA.
And as for connecting in Singapore, DXB or Hong Kong the only material thing is the inconvenience of the short leg out of Europe and then the very long leg to Oz of a connection in Dubai balanced by the EK lounge which is even better family cruise specials than the brand new CX first class lounge. Otherwise, an airport is an airport
Really, Ben? Closing in on Qantas? Pincer movement?! Why didn t BA put the A380 on all the way to Sydney if that was the end game? Seems to me BA is more of a threat to SIA s A380 services than anything else. The 777 shuttle to Sydney may be newer but it s smaller and like for like it s the same BA product across the entire family cruise specials fleet so, nothing has changed, really. BA still only has a single daily service from Sydney to London the last european carrier to fly out of Australia family cruise specials and you have to change aircraft in SIN ..
Sure there s a market of people family cruise specials who don t want to fly through the Middle East but there s an absolute bucket-load who fly quite happily through Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha and take advantange of the much shorter connections to a greater selection of cities without unnecessarily traversing through LHR. Emirates and Etihad didn t become the hugely successful juggernauts they are because people don t like flying through the Middle East QF knows this and VA does too which is why they ve jumped into bed with their respective bedfellows.
You say So far there is no real evidence that the Qantas-Emirates deal has achieved anything but to make Qantas smaller and expose more of its customers to the superior product offering and network offered family cruise specials by its Middle Easter benefactor , but the last Emirates flight family cruise specials I took (Syd-Bkk return) has made me vow I will never fly an Emirates 777 again due to the unbelievably cramped Economy cabin. The trolleys can almost not fit down the aisle, which is ridiculous. It made me long for the relative luxury of Qantas. The service on the return leg was also beyond bad (one rude and unprofessional attendant in my part of the cabin) and I never ask for anything on flights, so for me to notice things like that, it has to be quite extraordinary.
