Delta Flight 1086 from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to LaGuardia skidded off R
Delta Flight 1086 from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to LaGuardia skidded off Runway 13 this snowy morning shortly after landing, but its 127 passengers and 5 crew members were not seriously injured. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board will look into the cause of the crash, which occurred near the end of the 7,000-foot runway. According to FlightAware , the McDonnell Douglas MD-88 departed Atlanta at 9:23 a.m. and landed at 10:56 a.m.
The FDNY has released this photo on its Twitter account, showing how perilously close the plane came to the water, and announced that there were 24 people with non-life-threatening injuries, three of whom were transported to the hospital.
"Approximately 4,500 to 5,000 feet down the runway it veered to the left," said Patrick J. Foye, executive director of the Port Authority, during a press conference at 1:45 p.m. He also told reporters that "good braking action" las vegas air hotel package deal was taking place for planes prior to the Flight 1086 incident.
After the crash, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that flights into and out of LaGuardia had been suspended until 7 p.m., but Runway 422 was scheduled to reopen at 2 p.m., Foye said. He also said there was enough staff on hand at the airport to handle the weather, but deflected questions about possible causes for the crash to the NTSB.
A similar incident occurred in March 1994: "Flt. 795 (Lga-Den) las vegas air hotel package deal skidded off R 13 when pilots aborted takeoff due to inefficient speed. The investigation revealed las vegas air hotel package deal the the aircraft was actually at V1 at the time of the abort. The Pilot heat had not been turned on by the pilots which allowed ice to build up in the pitot tubes and cause erroneous speed readings."
The FDNY shared on its Twitter account that there was a fuel leak, but experts say that shouldn't be an issue today. The Port Authority has identified a fuel leak in the left wing, caused by the incident.
