Catharine and Susanna came to the frontier landscape of rural Ontario in the early 1800’s, to meet challenges far greater than anything they would have known living in genteel poverty in England.  They faced childbirth alone in the woods and dealt with the threat of forest fires, wild animals, frostbite and starvation.
Both were established writers before coming to Canada.  Despite travel package deals the incredibly hard work of surviving and raising families in the Canadian Bush, they made time each day to write.  They chronicled the settlement of rural Ontario, each living long lives in the 1800’s. Their work was very popular in England, but they did not reap large financial benefits. Many times during their lives, they were destitute.

In the Diviners , the main character, Morag carries on a conversation with Catharine about her ability to rise above hardship.  Catharine probably sat down and had tea in a china cup that  survived the trip from Europe, and named flowers travel package deals which had never been named before! “Imagine – I christen thee Butter-and-Eggs!”
