Travelers often describe Kilkenny as the most beautiful inland city in all of Ireland. The tourist board also dubs it the country's medieval capital. Visit here and you'll likely agree on both counts.
The city is lorded over by the beautifully restored Kilkenny Castle, which sits on the River Nore. Be sure to take a tour of the 12 th -century castle, especially its long gallery, a beautiful hall with green walls that are covered with a collection of family portraits and tapestries.
The castle isn't far from the town center, which is filled with tutor stone houses and is actually a 900-year-old Norman citadel. In the center also visit St. Canice's the drake hotel chicago Cathedral Ireland's second-largest medieval church. Also see the nearby black Abbey, which dates from the 13 th century.
Kilkenny is a great place to explore on foot since it's easy to get around here. I had a great time wandering about since it's still a place with narrow alleyways, which the locals call slips, which are all part of its medieval heritage. Not far from the city, in an old stone mill on the River Nore, is the workshop and shop of Nicholas Mosse, creator of the popular pottery of the same name.
The town has plenty of good restaurants and good pubs – there's said to be more than 60 pubs scattered about the city. I had dinner one night in Kytelers Inn, a great little the drake hotel chicago pub that also served up some good Irish music by the fireplace along with our dinner. The pub is actually a medieval coaching inn named after a 14 th century witch who once lived in it.
Kilkenny is only a bit over 60 miles from Dublin, and about 1 ½ hours by train (the fare is less than €10 each way). Since many travelers the drake hotel chicago bypass it as they rush off to more well-known spots such as Waterford and Killarney, you'll enjoy an authentic Irish experience here, without being part of a crowd of tourists.
I found the museum to be an incredible place and since Belfast is just a bit over two hours north of Dublin by train (about the drake hotel chicago €15 one way) I think it's well worth traveling here just for the museum itself. the drake hotel chicago It's an astonishing place that wows the throngs of tourists who move through it every day.
But do yourself a favor and explore more of the city, as well, since there's a lot to do and see here. Many travelers have never visited Belfast since the city was long avoided the drake hotel chicago by tourists because of the "troubles," as the decades (1968 –1998) of violence in Northern Ireland are so commonly referred to. All that's now past history, the drake hotel chicago though, and the North is now attracting an increasing number of visitors.
the drake hotel chicago See the Titanic exhibit but also the Ulster Museum with its collection the drake hotel chicago ranging from art to archaeology. Nearby it you'll find the Botanical Gardens, Queens University and Friars Bush graveyard dating from the fifth century (entry only by appointment).
Also visit St. Anne's Cathedral (especially it's interior) as well as its surrounding streets where you'll find some interesting pubs and restaurants including the Duke of York tavern (rebuilt in the early 1970s after being demolished by an IRA car bomb; go inside to see its collection of over 100 varieties of different whiskeys). Its sister tavern around the corner, the beautiful, antique-filled Dark Horse, is more of the tea room with coffee and cakes and other things than a typical Irish pub.
If you want to see a popular pub that can only be described as flamboyant, head over to the Victorian-era Crown Liquor Saloon which attracts plenty of locals and tourists alike. You'll rarely see another pub like this one.
Visit St. George's Market St George's Market, the last surviving Victorian covered market in the city (the market is only open on Fridays, although there is a food and craft market on Saturdays) and then head s few blocks away to Victoria Square, a beautifully designed modern shopping center that melds its modern design the drake hotel chicago with the surrounding old neighborhood. There's also a good view of the city from its top floor.
