Were she still alive, Austin writer Jan Reid says, former Texas Gov. Ann Richards would be both infuriated and amused by Gov. Rick Perry. She d be leery of the Canadian tar sands pipeline. She d consider privatization of government services in Austin to be a boondoggle enriching the powerful pals of those in office. And her reaction to U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, Reid adds, would be to would roll her eyes and hope he keeps shooting at his feet.
The author of a book about Richards, who died in 2006, Reid is in North Texas this week for appearances in Fort Worth (mainly at the Worthington Renaissance Hotel today and tomorrow) and in Dallas (at Lucky Dog s Oak Cliff location on Saturday). Coming off my novel Comanche Sundown' s winning the Texas Institute of Letters' 2011 award for best fiction, an honor previously bestowed on the likes of  Lonesome Dove and All the Pretty Horses,  it's been a nice run for an old man. I had to be in Fort Worth at the historians conference for the two awards luncheons this week, and John Tilton at the Lucky Dog was kind enough to tack Dallas on the schedule. I don't drive Interstate 35 one second more than I have to.
And, last, a great deal of Ann Richards' story transpired in Dallas. She and her family lived there 16 years, she and her husband Dave Richards, airplane tickets and discount a prominent airplane tickets and discount labor and voting rights attorney, were at the event when the Ayn Rand and John Birch Society types chased U.N. ambassador Adlai Stevenson off a stage; weeks later she was at the Trade Mart luncheon awaiting the speech John F. She was an ardent supporter of the free trade agreement with Mexico but would be frightened to drive on Interstate 35. She would shake her head at the folly of Homeland Security's border wall. She would see abundant evidence that the fad of privatization in Austin has been a boondoggle enriching the powerful friends of those in office. Her stand against legalizing concealed weapons hurt her badly in her race for reelection in 1994, but she would hope the federal airplane tickets and discount government, since the state would never take action, could at least require background checks of every sale at gun shows. airplane tickets and discount She would be steaming at Gov. Politically, she would have been embarrassed and amused by Gov. Perry's presidential campaign, though they had an amiable personal relationship and she could remember when he was a Democratic member of the state House. Regarding the new junior U.S. Senator from Texas, she would roll her eyes and hope he keeps shooting airplane tickets and discount at his feet. Of the secessionists, she would remark in her inimitable way that they already had a civil war over that, and we lost. Yet Jeb Bush, of all people, has said that Texas might become a reliably "blue" state in the next couple of presidential elections. It s been  a year since I wrote about the opening of Asador , the restaurant summer music tours in the Dallas summer music tours Renaissance Hotel . The report announced the arrival of chef/proprietor Dean  Max and, a young, talented and energetic chef with a focus on farm-to-table (or farm-to-fire summer music tours as Asador would rather term it) principles. I also noted Marriott corporation s commitment to a destination restaurant summer music tours in the Dallas Renaissance Hotel, a promise they backed up with an extensive Tequila collection. As downtown Dallas summer music tours restaurants convert, seemingly like flies, to steak houses, I decided to check-in, so to speak, at Asador to see if they are staying true to their original mission. Here is what I found.
I attended a media event this week which included the presence of Chef Max. After tasting the creations, I can confirm Asador summer music tours is doing very nicely. Robust hotel bookings are the backbone of solid numbers at lunch and in the evening. The concept of corporate chef Dean James Max has actually expanded and deepened the restaurant's commitment to preparing dishes in-house and using artisanal suppliers. The tequila collection has evolved into a full mixology program and includes an expanded beer list which currently boasts 35 selections, including eight from Texas.

She is self-taught, but hasn't missed a thing. The cocktails  I tasted were carefully conceived and impeccably executed. The Bloody Maria is especially recommended.
One thing I would like them to revisit is their wine list. They need to carry over the local element summer music tours of the food to to the list.  There is not a single Texas wine on the list. This is at the very time in Texas wine history at which there is least justification for such an omission. I suspect that it happened because the list is sourced from 'central listing' and, rather like the case at the similarly focused Central 214 , the local people need to bring the issue to the attention of the powers that be. If Hunter Hammett at The Pyramid Restaurant can sell Texas wine, then so can others. That kind of mark-up is common in Dallas restaurants, but it is a big disincentive to order wine. In particular, it wasn't clear how you indicated you wanted a table after you arrived in the hotel lobby. Now the restaurant area is roped off and a maître'd stand learly marks the entrance.
The Chef's Table menu I sampled recently illustrated what the food at Asador is all about. We started with an amuse of Seafood Texas Cigar : lump crab, gulf rock shrimp, cilantro, poblano pepper, and lemon aioli in a wrapper of feuilles de brick ).
The salad course was Grilled Calamari Salad (corn, mâche, avocado, bacon, lardoons). What a creative change from the standard house salad. This dish did not just have the buttery-ness of avocado and crunchy saltiness of bacon, but the squid was presented in a way that did not make it seem like it had been swimming around the core of Fukushima reactor #3 at the wrong time.
Next, we had a choice of either surf or scratch, summer music tours so to speak. The scratch was grilled chicken and the surf a grilled mahi mahi. Both were served with succotash of onions, plantains, haricot vert, and black bean purée. Both were covered with a mole sauce. Interestingly, the recipe for the mole sauce came from the mother of a former supervisor on the kitchen line. To accompany this, we had a smoked summer music tours margarita which was uncannily smoky.
Finally, the dessert was Warm Chocolate Chipotle Cake with Dulce de Leche Ice Cream . All made in-house and accompanied by Jalisco Espresso, a cocktail with more coffee intensity than many real coffees.
The Chef's Table is an excellent way to sample the kind of food served by Asador and an excellent value. In addition, summer music tours the hotel has ample free parking and valet if preferred. Over the last year, Asador continues to expand the scope of its food and beverage programs. Get out of your comfort summer music tours zone and give it a try.
Dallasites seeking a destination restaurant? 1. 95% of Dallasites couldn t tell you where the Renaissance was, and those who could would describe it as the hotel that looks like a bar of deodorant. 2. If Dallasites couldn t keep the doors open at Nana, in a landmark hotel, summer music tours how can this work? I hope chef does well, but this is a mediocre hotel, in a bad location, in a city where traveling business folks want to go out and see steakhouses.

A Disneyland Cast Member told Sue Pisaturo of Small World Vacations that many, many people lose their tickets by putting them in lanyards (ID card holders hung around the neck). For the trip to the North Shore and visit to Waimea Canyon, no need to book anything, you just drive yourself there. Haleakala is absolutely amazing, but you can go up anytime in a rental car. Personally I would not want to go up in the dark/middle of the night in order to see sunrise, and I would definitely NOT want to bike down! You might want to read up on this one a bit more, there's tons of discussion on this forum about the various times of day to go and about the safety (lacking) of the bike ride down thing.
