Disgraced New Orleans City Councilman Jon Johnson -- already awaiting sentencing on federal corruption charges -- is now facing a new criminal charge, this time for allegedly stealing a rental car just before Hurricane Katrina. Johnson, 63, turned himself in to the Kenner Police Department on Tuesday. He was transferred to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.
Johnson, who listed an address on Deslonde Street, rented a 2005 Chevy Classic from Vanguard Car Rental in Kenner on Aug. 21, 2005, according to the Kenner Police Department report. The car was supposed to be returned several weeks later, on Sept. 8, 2005.
The rental cubs season tickets company sent a letter via certified mail to Johnson's Deslonde Street address demanding that the car be returned. It was received and signed "A. Bartlie" on Nov. 2, 2005. Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway said he does not know who Bartlie is.
The long-time politician resigned cubs season tickets from the New Orleans City Council on July 18, moments after pleading guilty to federal corruption charges for funneling federal rebuilding funds through a non-profit he managed to his unsuccessful campaign for state senate in 2007.
