Petaluma s Cinnabar Theater has just the right intimate setting for Travels with My Aunt, as four actors lead you on world travels from the single setting of a transportation lounge. It s a fun play with lots of laughs as you re transported from England to Paris and Istanbul on the Orient Express, then by plane to Paraguay.
The play, adapted from the Graham Greene novel by Scottish playwright Giles Havergal, details the mid-life blue sky tours adventures of Henry Pulling, who hitherto has led a placid existence in Southwood, England as a bank manager. He has recently retired with plans to simply tend to his dahlias. Meeting his eccentric Aunt Augusta at his mother s funeral leads him to life-changing escapades and he learns to throw caution to the wind.
There are various ways that the play has been produced, with a small cast of men playing various roles. In Ken Ruta s production for Cinnabar, Benjamin Privitt plays Henry Pulling entirely. This is nice so that we can have at least one constant while trying to keep up with the narration on where we are and who is who. As Henry starts telling the tales of his adventures to the men working in the bar and lounge, these men adopt the roles of characters in the story. Privitt manages Henry s naïve nature well and Kalli Jonsson s Aunt Augusta blue sky tours is done with real flair. Richard Rossi handles a medley of characters, namely two of Aunt Augusta s lovers, and most comically, Wordsworth. Floyd Harden adeptly plays characters ranging from bartender to American teenager.
