I remember our tickets being relatively inexpensive (under $200 round-trip), our car rental was about $150 and for the hotel, I used 40,000 SPG points for 5 nights (stay 4 nights get the 5th night free). Other than knowing where we were going to stay, we had no real plans for the visit and I think that lack of a plan, perfect weather and wonderfully friendly people is what sold us.
Let s show you how a couple could get from New York to Savannah, non-stop, for a fantastic long weekend getaway without hotel suites in downtown chicago worrying about airfare, hotel, car or any travel incidentals. Jen and Mark want to travel to Savannah for 4 nights and stay in the heart of the historic district. They ll rent a car so they can explore (like we did) and will spend their time at the Hilton DeSoto . Sara and I actually had our wedding reception at the top of the DeSoto and had a great time with our family. I love the location of this property because it is outside of the really busy/touristy area in Savannah, but still in the heart of it and walkable to everything hotel suites in downtown chicago you d want to get to in the historic district.
To manage our costs for the trip, we re going to have Jen get one credit card and Mark get two credit cards. Both of their credit scores are strong, in the low 800 s, and they have no plans for any big purchases. We ll expect a 2-5 point dip for each of cards they apply for:
Jen and Mark s Itinerary:  Fly nonstop out of New York (JFK Airport) on Thursday, October 2 with JetBlue. Rent a car at Savannah Airport. Spend 4 nights at the Hilton DeSoto and fly back to New York on JetBlue in the evening on Monday, October 6.
Breakdown:  Jen will pay for the plane tickets with her Arrival card. It will cost her 30,000 miles to redeem two flights.  She ll get 3,000 miles back after the redemption, which will leave her with 15,000 miles to spare. Mark receives 2 free weekend nights at any Hilton after spending $2,500 within 4 months of account opening. He also gets Hilton Gold status, which gets them free internet and breakfast. Explanation: The booking here gets a little tricky, as Mark needs to effectively make three reservations. Thursday night he ll book using his Arrival card (and will use 15,800 miles to cover the $158 charge for the room). Sunday night will again be covered by the Arrival card at another $158 (which will cost him 15,800 miles. He ll get a total of 3,160 miles back, leaving him with 13,560 miles to use.
