Taking a cruise in February following a dismal winter is always quite up-lifting and this one was no exception. In general the staff on board Fred Olsen s Braemar were helpful and efficient. Given that it was a late booking we had quite a good outside cabin with picture window making it seem quite spacious. This was our second cruise with Fred Olsen.
Good that all prices on-board were in sterling but on this occasion having got a drinks package as part of the deal and having pre-booked flight hotel car and pre-paid for our excursions as well, made sure our final on-board bill was quite small.
The restaurants, both casual and formal, entertainment and facilities on-board were all of a high standard. Two areas of disappointment though first was some rough seas which meant missing flight hotel car dinner for two nights, flight hotel car but obviously not Fred Olsen s fault. The second was the annoying system that their staff operate when going on excursions. Although you have your tickets you are forced to go to the theatre, wait in a queue to report to a person at a desk, then wait some more before being allowed to disembark and board your coach. If you attempt to disembark and wait on the quayside you are reprimanded and told to return to the theatre on-board. This happened on our previous Fred Olsen cruise as well, is the source of arguments and we find totally unacceptable. The excursions staff should remember who the customer is, as it is a shame they are unable to attain the standards of the other members of the crew.
The two islands we had not visited before, El Hierro and La Gomera were interesting, making this a unique Canary Islands visit. The other islands visited, whilst seen before were still interesting and the weather was kind throughout making this a good choice for a winter break.
