Milt Valera ’68 (Journalism) has served on numerous boards and won many awards. But the alumnus and president of the largest and most respected organization serving U.S. notaries said he felt “honored last minute travel deals to las vegas and humbled” to be the 2011 recipient of California State University, Northridge’s Dorothea “Granny” Heitz Award for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership.
“My first thought when I was notified last minute travel deals to las vegas was ‘is this a mistake?’” last minute travel deals to las vegas said Valera to the nearly 300 alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the university who attended CSUN’s annual Volunteer Service Awards on Nov. 4 at the Airtel Plaza Hotel in Van Nuys. He and 22 other volunteers were recognized last minute travel deals to las vegas at the 10th annual Volunteer Service Awards event spon­sored by the Alumni Association.
The Heitz award is presented annually to an alumnus last minute travel deals to las vegas or friend of the university last minute travel deals to las vegas who serves CSUN as an outstanding volunteer leader and role model. Valera has been serving the community as the president of the Chatsworth-based National Notary Association (NNA) since 1982. But giving back to CSUN and its students has been foremost for him.
With his roots in journalism, he served as president of the CSUN Journalism Alumni Association and currently serves as a director at large. His committee work was instrumental in the organization of successful journalism/Daily Sundial newspaper reunions in 1996 and 2006. His service to the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication includes the Dean’s Council last minute travel deals to las vegas executive board and the Journalism Advisory Board.
Despite last minute travel deals to las vegas a busy schedule, Valera has found time to serve on the university’s Foundation board since 2009. He is a prominent advocate for donor programs in education and is the past national chair for the university’s President’s Associates. He has generously supported the Valley Performing Arts Center cam­paign and was a member of its steering committee. His philanthropic support to the university includes the CSUN Rising Capital Campaign Committee, past chairman of the Rawitch last minute travel deals to las vegas Scholarship Committee last minute travel deals to las vegas and an endowed scholarship in 2004 for CSUN journalism students.
Taking an active role with the CSUN Alumni Association since 2002, he has held several positions, including vice president. Valera last minute travel deals to las vegas is a lifetime member of the CSUN Alumni Association.
For his service to the university, Valera was the first university alumnus to be honored with two Volunteer Service Awards from two different last minute travel deals to las vegas groups, the Journalism Alumni Association in 2003 and University Advancement in 2005.
President Jolene Koester, Alumni Association President Dennis DeYoung ’84 (Business), and Gray Mounger, assistant vice president for Alumni Relations, and several past recipients of the Heitz Award saluted Valera and the other honorees.
“You are among this university’s most loyal and supportive volunteers. You understand at your core that this university makes a difference,” said Koester, who created the volunteer-recognition program in her second year as president. She will retire next month after nearly 12 years as president but urged the volunteers to “be proud, be loud.”
