A man is accused of scamming the Saint Paul Hotel out of nearly $2,000 after checking in with a woman and her two young daughters, claiming he had lost his wallet, hotels rome and then disappearing after a weekend of the high life, according to police.
The man, Derek M. Alldred, 43, was arrested this week at a Country Inn in White Bear Lake, where he told clerks he was unable to pay because he had lost his luggage, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday. He was charged in Ramsey County District Court with theft by swindle.
The woman and her daughters, ages 10 and 12, left the Saint Paul Hotel in a taxi after the hotel kept hold of the 2013 Lexus RX in which she had arrived. She had not been charged as of Wednesday and could not be reached for comment.
The four checked into the upscale hotel in downtown Saint Paul on June 21. Alldred, who said his name was Derek Aldrich of San Francisco, claimed to be a doctor who practiced medicine on the Hawaiian island of Maui. He said the four were in town to watch the Bruno Mars concert that evening, a Saturday.
Hotel staff repeatedly attempted to bill Alldred through third-party authorizations. Multiple credit cards and wire transactions hotels rome were declined. Throughout the fruitless process, the staff communicated by email with a person claiming to be the chief of cardiovascular surgery at the University of Hawaii/Maui Medical Association, who "continued to make assurances that the bill would be covered."
The 44-year-old woman he was with and her daughters left the hotel by taxi, after the hotel kept possession of the Lexus, which was registered to her, in its valet parking area. Inside the Lexus, police hotels rome found paperwork with the names "Derek Allred" and "Derek Allored."
On Monday, police contacted the woman's father, who said his daughter was dating a "scam artist" who was costing her and her business thousands of dollars, the complaint said. The father said Alldred was a "smooth talker" who had gained access to his daughter's accounts.
The staff, hotels rome having received word of what happened at the Saint Paul Hotel, was suspicious of a man trying to check in as "Dr. Derek Stevens," who was claiming that "his luggage from the airport was missing but is on its way," and that he couldn't pay.
White Bear Lake police contacted police in California, who said Alldred "has multiple aliases, a history of violence toward officers and a history of giving false information to officers," the complaint said. He has a 2005 conviction for burglary in California.
