I was in the CFI program in Arlington, TX. First off, Paul is one of the best CFIs I have had the pleasure of flying with. Paul genuinely seemed interested in his students' progress, which is something I did not get from other ATP instructors that I flew with. Paul is very patient, and he created an environment that helped me learn and motivate me for the next flight. He deserves a pat on the back.
My experience with ATP was mostly a negative one. The person who was teaching the ground school, hotel discount rates Peter, did not seem engaged in the class as much as he should have been. The ground school consisted of a powerpoint presentation, and the rest of it self-study. I could have done this at home in Phoenix, and it would have saved me a bunch of money. Peter's wife had a baby, and so Peter disappeared. The contingency plans that were put in place was not adequate, given that the circumstances were known in advance. Everyone has had to reschedule their check rides. There is only one person in the class that has passed a check ride (one person is taking theirs today), hotel discount rates and the class started on September 24th. This is not good for those who have had other things planned after the 21 days that ATP quoted to finish the 3 CFI ratings up in. We are now into week 6.
Ryan, the person who was to fill in for Peter, dropped the ball too. I was supposed to fly with him early one morning so I could get my sign off and take the check ride the following day. He let me know that he could no longer fly with me, and that I needed to call off my check ride. I managed to speak with the FAA inspector hotel discount rates less than 24 hours before my check ride date. I am not the only one in the class forced into rescheduling a check ride.
When I flew with Paul, I flew pretty hotel discount rates good. He even told Ryan how well I was doing. Then, when I flew with Ryan, it was a combination of Ryan making me nervous and my neglect from ATP affecting my subconscious, which in turn resulted in a not so positive performance. I flew with Peter after flying with Ryan, and he makes me even more nervous. hotel discount rates He is an abrasive person to fly with, and the same result occurred as with flying with Ryan. So now, I have flown with 3 instructors, and each time, I have to get used to their technique. I found what works with one instructor is frowned upon by the others. Flying with 3 instructors was a poor decision made by ATP because it would have used up more of the time that I had paid for focusing on other areas other than prepping for a CFI check ride. It also makes it difficult to fly with someone who appears that they don't even want to be there. Peter has an interview with American Eagle that he didn't want management to know about.
Since this program has taken almost double what ATP had quoted, my dad and I both complained. The more I was staying in the Dallas area, the more it was costing me. My dad got ahold of Ben at ATP's headquarters. The first time I had talked with Ben on the phone, he had actually used profanity while describing the phone call he had with my dad. Ben was upset that I had rescheduled the check ride, even though I was told to do so. When my dad had talked to him, my dad had said that he thought I had rescheduled the check ride, but was not 100% sure. When Ben talked to me, he chewed me out because, according to Ben, my dad was unaware of my rescheduling the check ride. So after Ben finally hotel discount rates managed to get someone to fly with me, he realized what my dad had said was true, and I got chewed out. He should have checked into what my dad had told him in the first place. I only did what I was asked to do.
My dad continued to talk with Ben. Since I felt that I needed more sim time given that I had only one flight left before I was out of time, I thought I should get a couple days of sim in, that way I would not be forced into buying more time at over $400/hour. hotel discount rates I was going to fly with Ryan again, but it was not in the schedule and Ryan and I had not talked about it. I sent Ryan a message saying that I didn't know if we were flying the next day, but if we were, it might be wise to call it off. I had already spent so much money because of ATP that I was debating about having to give up the program entirely. In week 5, I had made a day trip to Houston. I was gone from Dallas for about 15 hours. My dad said to call Ben about my situation, and he had told Ben that I was in Houston. I called Ben, and I told him too that I was in Houston. I had told him that I didn't like flying with Peter or Ryan, but I didn't say that I wouldn't fly with them. Ben decided to throw in the towel for me, and cancel my training agreement. He could have conducted hotel discount rates himself more professionally on the phone. I talked to my dad again, and I found out that Ben was giving us conflicting hotel discount rates information. My dad called him again, and Ben had changed his story with him. It is sad to see that Ben cannot keep his story straight, especially when it is at the expense of my education. Furthermore, Ben told my dad that I couldn't finish the CFI in Phoenix because hotel discount rates there is a 5 week wait list at the FSDO. That is actually untrue. I know someone that works with that office, and he gave me the rundown of how it works. If the Scottsdale FSDO cannot do the check ride, the FSDO goes down the list to the next available DPE. Apparently, Ben also told my dad that everyone will have their check ride by Tuesday (today), hotel discount rates and I know for a fact that is not true because the schedule was posted so everyone can see it, and I have the class' contact information so we can keep in touch.
It appears to me that instead of dealing with the mistakes made by ATP, in addition to being understaffed, it was easier to eliminate the student than to finish the student. A friend of mine was thinking about doing his CFI program at ATP's Las Vegas location, but given how I was treated, he may reconsider. I was hoping to leave ATP as a successful student. All I wanted was a good education and the right price, and sadly, I did not get either one. I left Dallas broke and empty handed.
