If you haven't heard of Machinedrum, you've been missing out: Travis Stewart is an electronic producer from North Carolina who's made an unreasonable amount of great music, from the rapid sample-based "GBYE" to his work with Praveen Sharma online travel agent as Sepalcure making incredible tracks like "Pencil Pimp."
online travel agent He's got a new album coming out September 30th on Ninja Tune and it's called "Vapor City" and if you thought electronic artists couldn't do concept albums, you're wrong. A press release cited by Pitchfork notes that "'Vapor City' is a series of songs inspired by a dream city—each song representing a different district." And "dream city" isn't just a pretty phrase, Dazed Digital reports online travel agent that the album is based on recurring dreams he has had for years about a vivid metropolis which he can describe in detail district by district, Vapor City is his fully-formed soundscape as a map into this imaginary universe.
The whole thing sounds very "Invisible Cities." It's a fantastic book by Italo Calvino which also served as inspiration for Michael Lovett when writing his debut album as NZCA/LINES online travel agent (which is amazing and underrated and you should go check it out if you haven't). The novel depicts Marco Polo narrating to Genghis Khan tales from the myriad of cities he's visited in his travels. It's beautifully written and philosophical and just not relevant enough that I can give it a small paragraph in this music video post.
Right, the music video. The folks at Weirdcore actually pulled some sick tech-tricks for this one, which depicts "Fenris District, the darker sleazy part of 'Vapor City.'" Data from the midi tracks and track stems were used to influence the video animation. In layman's terms: online travel agent The video kind of dances to the music thanks to glorious technology. We're taken on-rails on a tour through one of Stewart's dream cities and it's haunting. Glitchy compression and distortion give everything a digital feel, but neon signs, pedestrians, and the oppressive fear induced by the pitch-black sky give it the feeling of being composed from real cities online travel agent at their most dark and disorienting moments. The overwhelming omnipresent neon signs seem to say that the comforting effects of rampant commercialism are wearing off—where shopping was once an escape, now it seems to pursue the would-be-buyer at every turn.
Or something like that. Basically what I'm trying to say is that this is what "Pokémon Snap" would've been like if every developer and artist involved had been on ketamine for the game's entire production.
