As for those of you who are more experienced, you will find some mellower breaks in the South and West Maui areas, whereas the North Shore provides more of a challenge. Make sure to be polite and wait your turn to avoid any tension with locals. You may want to wear reef shoes, because there's a lot of coral around some of the best surf spots on the island, no matter what shore you're on.
It's best if you don't go surfing alone, because conditions can change quickly. It's a good idea to have someone watching from shore, just in case. As a general rule, the ocean is calmer in the early hours, and the wind picks up throughout the day, unless there's a storm disrupting the usual weather patterns.
