Now in fairness, this conversation is taking place within the industry. This is about the egos of people who sell travel and has nothing to do with how travel agents, home-based, independent, or what have you present themselves to the public.
I like the term home-based and I think it has grown in respect over the years. I remember the days when you could buy a clever little machine to hook up to your phone that made people think you had a receptionist. I don’t see that anymore.
I never did like the term home based agent as it lacks some professionalism. I knew a successful insurance agent who worked out of his home but he never called himself a home based insurance agent. personally, I use independent agent but I also like outside agent.
Most home-based travel agents wouldn t tell a client I m a home-based travel agent, if only because the term wouldn t have much meaning to them. I can understand why some folks don t like the trade press calling our segment of the travel distribution system home-based agents, but me, I could care less.
Why! as they (we) strive for the repeat referral business by making sure our clients are 100% satisfied. Many stories I heard when speaking to travelers while on site at resorts, was this is not what I was expecting and will not call that agent anymore.
The home based agent takes the extra time to help the client on very personal level as the are the sole representative to their business s success or failure. While retail offices with multiple agents fight over who can do the most sales, which at times means simply push the client through and move on to the next.
So enjoy the feeling of being home based, relax do the right thing for your clients and the sales will follow through for you. However I do suggest finding that niche that works for you and pursue that, as rewards are there for those that believe.
