PANAJI, Goa - In a move to defuse simmering tension between tourist taxi operators and tour operators of North Goa, the state government on Thursday evening, after discussions with all stakeholders, decided to modify the tourist taxi fare.
The transport department will finalize the new rates after discussing with tourist taxi operators, said Vinayak Nanoskar, general secretary, North Goa tourist taxi owners association, after the meeting.
The meeting chaired by chief minister Manohar Parrikar was attended by Dilip Parulekar, tourism minister, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, senior denver airport onsite car rental officials of tourism department and transport department and by representatives of tourist taxi associations.
Nanoskar said they have demanded strong action against illegal operators to stop them from conducting businesses. They have also demanded a ban on tour operators that charge their tourists in dollars and pounds. The government has not revealed its decision on this issue.
To keep tabs and control illegal foreigners working as tour operators, the chief minister has constituted a committee that will address any immediate problem between tourist taxi operators and the tour operators, said Nanoskar.
Also, two PCR vans forNorth Goa will be pressed into service to crack down on the illegal tour operators. The PCR vans will monitor the coastal belt areas of Calangute, Candolim, Baga, Anjuna and Vagator. The tourist taxi operators have been asked to contact the PCRs in the event there is trouble.
