Ok, now for something completely different. A travel review. Yep, see I wrote this review for Trip Advisor but they rejected it because I talk about the Flamingo in context of other properties. luxor hotel las vegas nv Apparently you re not allowed to do that on Trip Advisor, so we ll post it here instead. You can use this as info for future NAB Conventions
If you know Las Vegas at all, you know that the Flamingo is one of the classic names along the Strip being essentially the first of the Las Vegas resorts. We travel to Vegas almost yearly for a convention luxor hotel las vegas nv and we used to stay in Flamingo all the time because of the location, but for the past 5 years have stayed elsewhere. This year we decided to return back to the Flamingo luxor hotel las vegas nv because it s Monorail station simply is the most convenient of any resort station. Literally a 5 minute or less walk from your hotel room to the Monorail. luxor hotel las vegas nv If you are attending a convention that takes place in the Las Vegas Convention Center nothing beats the Monorail to / from that location. Morning luxor hotel las vegas nv tip: if you are at an especially large convention, the monorail will be full for quite a while each morning northbound to the convention center. Monorail officials will generally hold the very last car on the monorail empty for Flamingo and Harrah s guests. I didn t find this out until the last day of my convention.
Ok, walking in from the Taxi drop off is nothing exciting and the Bill s Gambling Hall right next door is under major renovation through 2014 so it s a construction zone when you drive up. Walking in, the casino is definitely from another era and a bit long in the tooth. Check in can be very slow, which honestly I heard complaints from many of my friends about slow check-ins all up and down the Strip this year for some reason. We checked in around 4:00pm (which is the official check-in time) and were through the line in about 20 minutes.
My wife selected one of the new Go Rooms at reservation because they look very retro and fun in the pictures. Indeed it was. In fact we were upgraded to the Executive Level at the very top of the hotel, Room 28024. We had a spectacular view of The Strip and the Bellagio Fountains. (see the attached photos) The room itself was very clean, with a kitchy headboard luxor hotel las vegas nv and comfortable bed. The bathroom featured a sliding glass frosted door with pink spotlights luxor hotel las vegas nv in the ceiling and a TV in the bathroom mirror. Weird and amusing all at the same time.
I should note that the pools are really nice at Flamingo and probably offer the most shade of any of the resorts on the Strip. We ve stayed at Treasure Island, Venetian, Flamingo and even the Frontier back in the day and there s more shaded spots at Flamingo than anything we ve seen.
Now the reason we stay in the Flamingo is purely the location on the Strip. Directly across the street from Caesar luxor hotel las vegas nv s Palace and their wonderful restaurants and shops, and a short walk to Planet Hollywood, Bellagio, Paris and the City Center. The restaurants in the Flamingo itself are rather weak, so we just use the hotel as a home base especially for the Caesar s restaurants. Why pay Caesar s or Bellagio prices when they are literally across the street? We do this same trick with the Venetian and Treasure Island. Stay in Treasure Island and walk directly across the street to take part in all the Venetian has to offer.
As for the food inside the Flamingo ..well we had breakfast one day in the Tropical Breeze Café. Terrible is all I can say. Eggs Benedict with a yellow sauce that was supposed to be hollandaise and un-toasted english muffins. I just ate the eggs and ham and left the rest on the side. The potatoes had what tasted like multiple tablespoons luxor hotel las vegas nv of salt in them. Another day we had breakfast in the Paradise Garden buffet and there the omelette station was very good. Most everything that was pre-prepared was weak, but the omelettes were worth the price of admission. And that s all we ate in the Flamingo itself. I will note that the two coffee shops in the resort close very early, around 9 or 10pm. I have no idea why, but they do.
If you really want an amazing buffet while staying at the Flamingo, just walk across the street to the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar s. Simply amazing luxor hotel las vegas nv and everything is super fresh. The Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood is great as is the one at Bellagio too. All very convenient to Flamingo.
All we care about in Flamingo is that we have a clean room and we love the wildlife habitat which is pretty unique in Vegas. If you ve never seen it, the wildlife habitat features flamingos (of course) and a wide array of birds, waterfowl, fish and turtles. It s also a great outdoor area to just relax, have a cup of coffee and chat. Something you don t find in very many locations on the Strip or Vegas in general. Since it s secluded inside the resort, there s very little sound other than the natural songs of the birds except when Carlos and Charlie s gets cranked up at night. I highly recommend luxor hotel las vegas nv you sit by the flamingos, the water fall or the flamingo fountain at least once, very relaxing. If you are around, they do feedings at 8:30am and 2:00pm (check times outside) luxor hotel las vegas nv and there is a caretaker who will tell you a bit about the animals and take questions.
The Casino itself is kind of sad because it is so old. The low ceiling traps the cigarette and cigar smoke so it never disappears. I don t go to gamble anyway, I used to work in a Casino and quite honestly, the games don t interest me. But if you are going for the gambling, you probably want to go elsewhere unless you just like to game in the same place you re staying. For whatever reason they decided to put EXTREMELY loud music and an exotic dancer above the gaming tables at one of the entrances from the Strip. Not sure how you re supposed to play a table game with the EXTREMELY luxor hotel las vegas nv loud music and the exotic dancer was just sad in that tiny cage. Not sexy at all.
If you want to play while you re in Vegas I personally like Caesar luxor hotel las vegas nv s, Paris and Venetian for gaming. luxor hotel las vegas nv Mostly high ceilings to allow the smoke somewhere to go and they re pretty nice rooms. But as I said, I really luxor hotel las vegas nv don t gamble, we like the dining and shows much more.
That s pretty much it. Yes we absolutely plan to stay in Flamingo in the future because we know exactly what we are getting when we purchase. An older casino luxor hotel las vegas nv without all the glitz of the newer ones, but a VERY convenient place to stay and a clean room. I will say there is something about seeing the Flamingo all lit up at night that makes you smile though, it s just a classic place.
