After a plunge in airline stock prices following the first Ebola case in the United States on Sept. 30, those stocks have recovered. Investors in the airline and the hotel industries await the next episode in the Ebola outbreak.
“The travel industry is a bit caught; they don’t know what the Obama administration will do,” said a former Bush administration Homeland Security Department official, who asked to not be identified by name.
“The industry doesn’t want to be defending the administration’s current actions if the next day it imposes a visa ban or expands airport screening. They don’t want to be seen as defending something that later turned out to be weak,” he said.
Credit Suisse analysts Joel Simkins and Benjamin Chaiken wrote in a note for investors Friday that “Ebola coverage will remain prevalent in the media and could pressure travel related stocks,” but hotel occupancy and revenue trends appear to be healthy.
They added, “We recognize that if Ebola ramps up meaningfully in the U.S. (meaningful outbreaks across a number of cities) this could start to negatively affect travel activity; however, we are hopeful that Americans will adjust to the new norm as we have seen following air hotel package deal las vegas nv other shocks to the system….”
A survey of 421 travel managers conducted last week by the GBTA Foundation, the education and research arm of the Global Business Travel Association, found that nearly 80 percent of the managers said international business travel has not been affected much or at all by the Ebola outbreak.
