After months of anticipation, planning and waiting, the time had finally come… For the RK Motors crew, the second day of Hot Rod Power Tour meant an early meeting at the speedway, a quick transition to Interstate 85 and eight solid days of intense work and intense fun. We headed south out of Charlotte, among thousands of our comrades, into the backroads of Western North Carolina on our way to punch in at Chilhowee Park in Knoxville, Tennessee.
But then, about two hours into our journey, that old familiar rule of car building – the more extreme you get, the more temperamental your ride becomes – welcomed us to the side of a 4-lane highway. With RK Motors owner Rob Kauffman at the wheel, the RK527 Mustang began to miss and lose power. At first, we were inclined to think the car had simply fouled a few plugs while climbing through the mountains. Then we traced the fuel rails, fuel lines and fuel tanks for any leaks. A few minutes after the electrical system had been given the green light, we checked the coil. And finally, we decided to plug in a second ignition box, just in case.
In a collective cloud of frustration, watching hundreds of classics motor by, we decided to contact our showroom and schedule travel plans back to Charlotte. But then, a ray of sun came when our friends from Jon Kaase Racing Engines called to see if we had checked the car’s adjustable distributor rotor. Two screws later RK527 roared back to life, and we frantically packed our tools and supplies for a spirited sprint to Knoxville.
After all that good fortune, we were most thankful for one thing: the MANY friends and enthusiasts who stopped to lend a hand. After a quick 2 hour drive we finally arrived in Chilhowee Park in Knoxville, Tennessee. With less than 10 minutes to spare we stamped our cards and are still eligible for the Long Hauler award. Check out the photo gallery from our very eventful day below.
