Steven Spielberg has been bringing a lot of sci-fi to TV lately as the executive producer of TNT s Falling Skies and both of the CBS series Extant and Under the Dome. Now he s bringing one of his own sci-fi properties from the big screen hotels boston downtown to the flickering box.
The Wrap has word that Spielberg and his Amblin Television banner are teaming with Godzilla remake scribe Max Borenstein to turn the 2002 sci-fi crime thriller Minority Report starring Tom Cruise into a TV series. It s crazy to think that it took 12 years for this to happen since the premise is basically tailor-made hotels boston downtown for a crime procedural TV series.
For those who don t know or may not recall, Minority Report is loosely based on a short story by Philip K. Dick (whose work inspired Blade Runner and more classic sci-fi), and focuses on a special division of law enforcement hotels boston downtown known as pre-crime. This department uses psychics known as precogs (precognitives) to predict when a future murder is going to be committed, and then they prevent it before it happens.
As of now, it s not clear how similar the TV series will be to the film, but it s safe to assume that it will focus on the pre-crime department, and likely deal with some over-arcing hotels boston downtown themes and storylines of various characters within the organization. The core conspiracy from the film likely won t be the same, but surely there will be plenty for viewers to sink their teeth into beyond the pre-crime aspect of the show.
What would be interesting is if the division was expanded to beyond just the crime of murder, as long as it doesn t turn into a copycat of Person of Interest on CBS, which has a less futuristic hotels boston downtown premise that s similar to that of Minority Report , and has become much more serial than procedural hotels boston downtown as the series has continued. With a writer like Max Borenstein on board, who made the King of Monsters cool again, this should be pretty damn great.
The new series is expected to have the same title as the original film, so you can expect some cable guide confusion with the forthcoming Comedy Central program of the same name that will feature The Daily Show correspondent Larry Wilmore taking the timeslot that will be vacated by Stephen Colbert when he moves to The Late Show on CBS . But the shows will pull in very different audiences, so it shouldn t really be a big problem.
