I didn't end up buying any pottery on my first trip to Italy thirteen years ago, but I was bound and determined to do so on our second trip in 2009. Our friend Steve in Rome said that the rustic pottery I liked was called bucchero . Bucchero, i s also the name for the black glazed pottery of the ancient Etruscans . Steve said if I was going to find it an yw here, that it would be on our visit to Orvieto.
We looked all over Orvieto but, try as we might, i t was more difficult than I expected. In 1999 we had seen bucchero almost everywhere, In 2009, it felt like it had fallen out of fashion and had disappeared from the restaurants and shops we visited.

My disappointment must have shown on my face, but that disappointment changed to smiles of disbelief when I heard what she said next. Anna told me that if I wanted the cracked platter that I could have it, for free! What incredible kindness! This blog is about a love affair I have with a still little known and underappreciated part of Italy, the Sabina. Situated largely in the Province of Rieti to the northeast of Rome, the Sabina has its roots in the ancient Sabine people who lived in the area from before the time of the Romans and ultimately merged luxury car rental los angeles with the Romans in Republican times. My partner and I stumbled on the Sabina when we were looking for a quiet, less-travelled part of Italy to stay in during a trip there in 2009. Since that first fateful trip a few years back our connection to and love for this fascinating region has grown deeper through the personal relationships we have made with some very special people there. You can complain all you want about Facebook but I am here to tell you that Facebook and the connections we made with people in the region through Facebook before our second trip to the region has changed our lives forever. Over the next while I will share a number of stories about our recent visit to this truly spectacular part of Italy and introduce you to not only some amazing places, things to see, do, taste and eat, but also some pretty amazing people.
