There was a dinner planned to celebrate my parents 43 wedding anniversary. I made myself their gift (check travel distance from germany to africa this blog entry for that story). So in order to surprise them, I needed to rent a car at Logan International Airport, Boston, Massachusetts and drive myself home.
My husband arranged the reservation for me. It was to be about $25 a day per the coupon he used online. He assured me that through the credit card company and our own car insurance, I would be completely covered and would NOT need additional insurance through Dollar.
When it was my turn, the young man at the counter instantly began to sell and encourage purchase of the insurance for my car. I explained that I was covered. He told me I wasn t. Interesting. I again explained that through two different sources I was covered and didn t need the extra insurance. He insisted that I was not covered sufficiently and that if I was in an accident and the car was kept for repairs, I would owe Dollar Rental for every day the car was out of service. He said to me I can t make you buy it but I wouldn travel distance from germany to africa t risk it. Shaking his head dramatically he said I would at least get the minimum. Something terrible could happen and then where will you be? I admit, I faltered. He scared me! So I agreed to the basic insurance which increased my rental by double the initial quote.
Later that evening I checked both my credit card company with which I rented the car and my personal car insurance. And yes, I was completely covered. This is a common practice I was told. Rental companies know that this type of insurance covers completely. Yes, even if the car was held for repairs, even if it was all my fault, my two companies would cover me.
I was very upset that this young man pulled the wool over my eyes. I was even more upset that the company he works for must endorse that sort of behavior, pushing their employees to up-sell in this fashion.
Then .Monday evening was my set time of departure. Driving toward Boston at around 5 P.M. I quickly realized that I wasn t going to be able to make my flight. If the smoke on the horizon coming into Boston wasn t enough, my father called me and explained that the Governor had shut the city down, closed the airport and suggested people stay out of crowded areas. I asked to speak to someone I had ten minutes to spare. I explained the man apologised. I was told I would not be charged the extra day fee since the terror situation in Boston was the reason I kept the car longer.
